Three of the top 10, highest-paid public university chief executives in the country work in Florida, according to a report released today by The Chronicle of Higher Education.University of Florida President Bernard Machen received $726,849 in pay and benefits, placing him sixth on the list. Florida State University's T.K. Wetherell followed at seventh, with $702,127. President John Hitt, of the University of Central Florida, ranked ninth, collecting $684,708 last year.
...In comparison, most university faculty in Florida are paid less than $100,000 a year.
"There seems to be a disproportion there," said Tom Auxter, a philosophy professor at UF and president of the 18,000-member United Faculty of Florida, which represents faculty at colleges and universities. "Faculty salaries [in Florida] are $10,000 to $20,000 behind their [national] counterparts."
This cost is just the tip of the iceberg for UF, as Machen has added additional layers of bureaucracy in the form of a Chief Operating Officer. This person will in essence be running the University, leaving Machen to... um... I'm not sure. What DOES Machen do for his salary? It ha a motivator of faculty? Do they trust his leadership? I am a U.F. employee and I totally agree with this site except for the fact that you say most employees make $100,000. I am a plumber and I bareley make $26,000 and that goes for most of ppd. I would like to see Bernie make it on my sallry,I don't think he could. Not only has he cut out all overtime and bonuses(except his) he has also cut out our on-call service which cost us employees $300 a month ,so when he says he hasn't cut salries he is not only a rich snob who doesn't follow his own rules he's a liar too!!! d,wright plumber UF P.S. this was a good job until he got here HE NEEDS TO GO AND GO NOW!!!!! We also need to get this site out there, no one Knows about it.
That is true ! how can the quote the salaries the employees get without being sure about it?

If the employees are paid 20th then the pres should be paid around 20th. Seems like good leadership to me.
