State Board Deserves Say In Presidents' Evaluations

From the Tampa Tribune:
Today the Florida Board of Governors will consider a proposal to involve itself in the annual evaluations of university presidents. It's not a popular suggestion among some presidents or local university boards of trustees, but it's needed if Florida intends to build a cohesive, well-coordinated state university system that makes the most of available resources. University presidents are among the most important cogs in the wheel of higher education, but the current system allows them only to be evaluated by their local boards, a process that often doesn't consider how a president's leadership fits into the overall Florida higher education system. At its worst, the current system creates parochialism, turf-protection and political tug-of-wars in Tallahassee as universities seek to go their own way rather than working for the good of the state. Somebody - and it ought to be the voter-created statewide Board of Governors - must keep an eye on the big picture.

This site has not been getting much traffic, it appears.
Too bad, because we need it more than ever.
Bernie's recent page-1 inerview with the Sun illustrates why. He had little good to say about anything; mostly complaints. He's well into the process of firing the top administrators he has hired himself. At least one left because he hated working for Bernie.
Yet the Trustees maintain their indifference or lack of understanding.
Too bad.

I went to start a fireberniemachen.com site and you beat me to it. Who is keeping this guy around? His latest idea is to cut education and nursing undergrad programs to increase UF's rating. Who is making our rating such a priority? Last year they wanted to limit undergrads to increase our rating. As a tax payer and Alum, I want them to increase the undergrad programs. Too many kids can't get in now. It would be better to send my kids out of Alachua county for high school so they have better chance to get into UF. That's crazy!!!

Wow! Traffic is REALLY down. Could it be because ol' Bernie has improved so much?

I am writing this on June 20, 2009. This week Bernie ranked UF as highly as Harvard, and above Duke. I wondered if it has anything to do with his bonuses....

A letter in today's Gainesville Sun put this report just where it belongs, saying that such a ranking is (in my words) ludicrous.
Let's get this blog going again, people!!
